Level 5: skim for gloss, dark color, and critical light
Level 5 is Level 4 plus a thin skim coat over the entire surface. GA-214 specifies it where non-flat paints, glossy decoration, dark or deep tones, or critical lighting occur. The skim equalizes porosity so joints do not photograph through the paint. Highland and Alpine great rooms, dark accent walls, and gloss in a hall with a window at the end are the usual reasons we write Level 5. It is more labor. It is not a luxury label. It is how those surfaces are supposed to be built.
